CITI :: Transfer certification

Transfer Certification From Another Institution

All researchers included on IRB-SBS protocols must have certification to conduct human subjects research, regardless of the institution to which they belong. If you are a UVa researcher and you already completed your CITI training at another institution, you can transfer your certification to our University. If you (or a researcher on your team) belong(s) to another institution, we still require human subjects research training certification, but we will accept an equivalent certification from the home institution.

Researcher from another institution
As mentioned above, we will accept human subjects research training certification from the researcher’s home institution.  Please send proof of human subjects training to Maizie Jackson, If the researcher from another institution doesn’t have human subjects training, the researcher can either obtain certification from his or her home institution or they can complete the CITI training for UVa as a guest. For more information about completing CITI as a new user, please see New User. Please note that if you take the UVa training as a guest, you need to print your certification and submit it to Maizie Jackson; see Mail for more information on submitting documents to our office. We do not receive automatic notification for Guest users.

UVa Researcher who obtained CITI training from another institution
If you already completed CITI training at another institution, you must transfer your account so that it is affiliated with UVa. You may be required to complete additional modules if the modules from the two institutions are different.

  1. Log into your CITI account (UVA Netbadge).
  2.  If you currently have a CITI Account but your username is not your UVa Computing ID, please select "Change login information" on the Main Menu page and change your user name to your UVa Computing ID.
  3. Change your institution affiliation by going back to the Main Menu page. Select “Affiliate with another institution” (dark red text in the top third on the right).
  4. Select “University of Virginia” in the “Participating Institutions” drop-down menu and select “submit” at the bottom of the page.
  5. On the Main Menu page, you will have new coursework under “My Courses”; complete the modules as directed.
  6. If you can’t complete the learning modules in one session, you can return at a later date without losing your progress. When you log into the website, you will be directed to complete the modules that you haven’t finished.
  7. Once you complete the modules, you can return to the “main menu.” How do you know when you've successfully finished the CITI training requirement? On the Learners Menu screen, you will see under the word "Status" it will say "Passed" in blue and list your training completion date.  (If not, it will say “not passed” in red and provide a link for you to re-enter the modules. You don’t have to start over; you can simply select the modules with the lowest scores and retake the quizzes until you score 80.) On this same page, you can print your completion certificate, but you don’t need to submit it to the IRB-SBS. The IRB-SBS will be notified that you have completed your training.
